There are many ways to help new board members; orientations, information access, leadership notebooks and more. A unique idea is appointment of an experienced leader to coach the board and new directors: a Trustee Emeritus or “rusty trustee.” The purpose is to help the inexperienced directors and board understand history, culture and good governance. The trustee can serve as the voice of experience and historian, the voice of an elder who can the board to think strategically.
